Xu Lanxiang’s Final Snow in Against the Current

Xu Lanxiang’s Final Snow in Against the Current

Near its finale, Against the Current (兰香如故) has earned praise for a story that refuses easy comfort. Xu Lanxiang (许兰香) returns from Jinling (金陵) to the capital in episode 31, leaving the place where her troubles began and facing the city that once belonged to her. The cruelest villain, Zhao Gelao (赵阁老), caused the massacre of the Shen family. When the corrupt officials fall, the Shen family’s name is cleared at last. Xu Lanxiang can finally reclaim her birth name, Shen Jialan (沈嘉兰). Yet the finale does not hand her a simple happy ending. It asks what a woman keeps after power, war, and love have taken almost everything. Her answer lies in memory, work, and the people she chooses to protect.

Truth Under Snow

War breaks out when the Prince of Han raises troops. Lin Jinqi (林锦岐) is ordered to crush the rebellion. He is badly wounded and disappears. Xu Lanxiang finds him and saves his life. Afraid that pursuers are close, he tells her to leave. He even asks her to marry someone else after his death. She answers with one memory: he once protected the person she cared about. She has known for years that her long-sought benefactor was him. What she has not understood are the burdens he hides behind his silence. Once the fighting ends, he receives the title Marquis of Jing’an (靖安侯). The real knot between them, however, is not untied by rank. It is untied by a field of nameless graves.

Xu Lanxiang’s Final Snow in Against the Current

Lin Jinqi leads her outside the city to a desolate burial ground. There he tells her the truth. After the Shen family was condemned, he risked his life to bury their bones in secret. He also admits why he once asked the emperor to grant a marriage. He was selfish, terrified of losing her, and afraid she would refuse him. Both of them had carried hard needs: one wanted freedom, one carried duty, and neither wished to be controlled. Lin Jinqi had always shouldered every responsibility alone. After surviving so many brushes with death, they become the two people who understand each other best. The misunderstandings between them dissolve. Xu Lanxiang has never liked using power to crush others, and she does not begin now.

At the end of the year, snow falls. They complete the missing wedding rite from their first marriage, the shared cup, without an imperial order and without force. Two people covered in old wounds finally give each other the rest of their lives. They later have three children. Fate still plays a bitter trick. Years of battle have left Lin Jinqi scarred inside and out. At fifty-one, his strength runs out, and he dies. Xu Lanxiang, still in her thirties, holds the Lin household together and raises their children alone. She keeps writing a play, The Shen Family Chronicle (沈家记), so folk songs can preserve the Shen family’s old story. When she dies, she holds the old sachet Madam Shen gave her. The word “live” is written on it. Her long life settles into silence.

Loyalty and Freedom

Han Liang (韩梁) leads the officials who support the crown prince during the Prince of Han’s rebellion. Once the new emperor’s throne is secure, fear replaces gratitude. Eunuch Cao (曹) keeps stirring suspicion, and the emperor grows colder toward Han Liang. On a night of heavy snow, Han Liang kneels outside the imperial study and begs for an audience. The emperor refuses to see him. Han Liang will not leave. In the end, he collapses and never stands again. Xu Lanxiang’s old escape from marrying him now looks like mercy. With his stubborn, upright nature, a marriage to him would likely have led her into the same frozen night.

Xu Lanxiang’s Final Snow in Against the Current

Lü Jier (吕蕺儿) grew up beside Xu Lanxiang. She enters the Lin house as a maid, quick and clever, but too eager to win. She wants to climb toward Lin Jinqi. Yet she is not hollow. She has loyalty. Once, she gives Xu Lanxiang a piece of candy she cannot bear to eat herself. Later, Zhao Xingtang (赵星棠) frames her, and Xu Lanxiang saves her life. Lü Jier remembers that debt. So when Xu Lanxiang falls into danger, she does not stand aside. She risks herself to save her. Xu Lanxiang, in turn, goes to the capital with Lin Jinqi partly to rescue Lü Jier. Their bond is not polished or sweet. It is made of hunger, fear, and one shared piece of candy.

Once free, Lü Jier stops clinging to men, rich houses, or even Xu Lanxiang. She takes Xiao Pu (小蒲) and establishes her own female-led household. She uses her mind to run a business and earn a living. When she says goodbye, she tells Xu Lanxiang, “I will live well. You must live well too.” For the first time, she lives as Lü Jier, for herself. Her name comes from fish mint, a wild plant that grows in damp, dark soil and refuses to die. The finale feels fair because each person’s ending grows from an earlier choice. Against the Current leaves its most moving gaps and its quiet completeness inside those choices.
