At first, Zhao Xingtang (赵星棠) is not easy to love. As the senior wife in Lin Manor, she snaps, sharpens her tongue, and lets rage arrive without warning. A maid’s small mistake can bring a storm. On the surface, she looks like the classic furious first wife in a household drama: wounded, suspicious, always aiming […]
The finale of Against the Current (兰香如故) wants a grand verdict. The emperor clears the Shen family and builds graves and a shrine for its “virtuous” women. It feels less like justice than old feudal packaging. The court scenes in the last episodes are awkward. Many viewers compare the show to the years between Zhu […]
A dropped hairpin can speak louder than a speech. In Against the Current (兰香如故), Xu Lanxiang (许兰香) lets a small floral ornament fall in front of her grandmother. She says nothing. The old woman understands at once: be careful of Du Cuique (杜翠雀). That tiny object is not a pretty extra. It is a warning, […]
In the finale of Against the Current (兰香如故), Du Cuique (杜翠雀) dies outside the Lin estate. Before the flames reach her, she has already lost three times to Lanxiang (兰香). The first scheme, built around larkspur and aimed at Lin Jinqi (林锦岐), falls apart. The second, a poison plot inside the Lin household, is exposed. […]
At the end of Against the Current (兰香如故), four servant girls stand near Lanxiang (兰香): Xiaolian (小莲), Yuchan (玉蝉), Gantang (甘棠), and Baogai (宝盖). Each has a different bond with her mistress. Xiaolian feels closest. Yuchan works best. Gantang reads people with quiet wisdom. Yet the one who remains beside Lanxiang the longest is Baogai. […]
After the finale of Against the Current (兰香如故), one argument keeps returning: Lin Xiuru (林秀茹) is the most wicked woman in the Lin family. The proof? She used an amicable divorce to secure the Yuan family estate, then stained the dead Yuan Shaohui (袁绍辉) with rumors of military failure. Because of her, her daughters fell […]
At the close of Against the Current (兰香如故), Lanxiang (兰香) imagines all the sisters standing together. Lin Jinqi (林锦岐) has died. The camera drifts across the group: Furong Xiu (芙蓉绣) sings onstage, Yuchan (玉蝉) reads, Lin Xiulai (林秀莱) checks accounts, Xiaolian (小莲) jokes with Gantang (甘棠), Lin Xiuwan (林秀芄) leads her horse, and Lin Xiuru […]
In the last episode of Against the Current (兰香如故), Lin Jinqi dies. That morning he teaches his daughter sword forms. Later he visits Yuelao Temple (月老庙) and asks for a long red thread. At night he ties it around himself and Lanxiang. Even if fate tangles them, he says, they must still become husband and […]
In Against the Current (兰香如故), marriage is not a quiet footnote. It is a battlefield with teacups and account books. Lanxiang (兰香) watches three maids she trusts: Yuchan (玉蝉), Xiaolian (小莲), and Gantang (甘棠). Yuchan marries Jiugao (九皋), Xiaolian marries Nanke (南客). Both become wives of Qianhu (千户), a military rank with real weight. Then […]
In the finale of Against the Current (兰香如故), a dying woman says a name that belongs to two daughters. Xu Lanxiang (许兰香) turns, thinking her mother calls her. Then Xue Guihua (薛桂花) whispers, “Lanxiang is coming for me.” The room goes quiet. Xu Lanxiang does not scream. Her tears fall without sound. Why? Not only […]
