Can Against the Current Save Xu Lanxiang?

The finale of Against the Current (兰香如故) wants a grand verdict. The emperor clears the Shen family and builds graves and a shrine for its “virtuous” women. It feels less like justice than old feudal packaging. The court scenes in the last episodes are awkward. Many viewers compare the show to the years between Zhu Di (朱棣) and Zhu Zhanji (朱瞻基) in the Ming Dynasty. As fiction, it can bend history. But its choices still invite questions. The biggest one is not politics. It is why Xu Lanxiang (许兰香), once cautious and sharp, becomes the only person who can solve everything.

A Sharp Start

Early episodes work because they treat survival as a daily task, not a slogan. Shen Jialan (沈嘉兰) watches her family die with dignity. She carries her mother’s last wish and hides inside the name Xu Lanxiang. As a servant in the Lin house, she keeps her head down. She does not flirt, boast, or chase pity. Her goal is plain: leave slavery with the Xu couple. These choices feel human. The show understands that courage can look like silence, careful steps, and a bowl of rice earned without humiliation.

Then marriage changes the story’s logic. Xu Lanxiang becomes the answer to every crisis. Court intrigue, family disputes, military plans, even a pirate attack—all wait for her judgment. The script calls this wisdom. It often feels like a stage trick. Her old identity as a Shen noblewoman is used to explain why she outthinks everyone. That weakens the survival theme. If survival means adapting, then she should sometimes fail, compromise, or stay ordinary. Instead, she becomes a walking solution. The other women lose room to breathe. Their choices exist mainly to prove her specialness, not to show their own lives.

The first half also gives women different shapes. Lü Jier (吕蕺儿), Second Sister, and Zhao Xingtang (赵星棠) have enough flaws and motives to feel real. Others remain thin. Xu Lanxiang’s survival line is clear, almost too clear. It runs through every episode like a bright thread. Yet when the show tries too hard to make her unique, it strips away warmth. She stops being a woman trying to live. She becomes a lesson. That shift matters. A character can be clever without becoming a monument.

Love or Debt?

The romance between Xu Lanxiang and Lin Jinqi (林锦歧) is the most troubling thread. He collects the Shen family’s bodies and remembers Shen Jialan’s birthday. Those acts deserve thanks. They do not automatically become love. The Lin family once betrayed the Shen family. He canceled an engagement and stepped away when danger arrived. Gratitude and old pain can share a room. Passion cannot erase them. The show seems to believe that a grave, a shrine, and a remembered date are enough. That is convenient writing, not emotional truth.

Lin Jinqi also loses his edge after marriage. Earlier, he reads state affairs better than most men. Later, he needs Xu Lanxiang to point at every major decision, especially when imperial power changes hands. His line about remembering no woman after marrying his sister-in-law is oily and misplaced. No serious meeting with relatives present should turn into a cheap love confession. It breaks the scene. Worse, it makes him small. He stops being a political man with doubts. He becomes a follower of her “way,” walking before the throne only as she directs, then resigning because she decides.

If this is meant to be a woman’s awakening, the ending undercuts it. Xu Lanxiang crawls out of slavery and returns to common status. Then an imperial edict locks her inside a household again. She trades one cage for another, then calls it love. The show may want a bittersweet compromise. It plays more like a retreat. Her intelligence is allowed, but her freedom is not. Her feelings are treated as proof of growth, while the structures around her remain untouched. That is not awakening. It is a softer cage with better curtains.

Pirate Puzzle

Du Cuique (杜翠雀) is another missed chance. Her early arc works. She is short-sighted because of her rank, clever enough to scheme, and willing to profit through dirty means. Her anger exposes how the era limits women. When she returns with pirates, the plan should be tense. Xu Lanxiang has the women throw oil on the attackers. Fine. But the pirates run without a real fight. Du Cuique insists on mutual destruction, yet only she is caught in the net. The scene wants shock. It delivers confusion.

How does an exiled criminal become a pirate leader? The show says she wins hearts. That answer is thin. Charisma alone cannot build ships, crews, and loyalty overnight. Her later role feels mechanical. She exists to contrast with Xu Lanxiang: one reckless and proud, the other calm and far-sighted. The comparison is too neat. It turns a once-interesting woman into a prop for the heroine’s military wisdom. A rival should have her own logic. Du Cuique deserves a motive that does not vanish whenever the plot needs a quick battle.

The finale also rushes its themes. The emperor’s graves and shrine may be meant to honor loyalty, but they freeze women into symbols. The court politics feel stiff. The pacing jumps. Xu Lanxiang’s survival efforts remain visible, yet the last episodes push her beyond ordinary humanity. She becomes too special to be true. The first half asked how a woman survives a cruel system. The second half asks how everyone can admire her within it. That is a smaller, safer question. Against the Current had a strong beginning. Its ending needed less polish and more honesty.
