In the fantasy world of Veil of Shadows (月鳞绮纪), a young fox spirit named Lu Wuyi (露芜衣) thinks she has found her fated love. Sent by the Fox King from Wuxiang (无相) Moon Hall, she must get close to a boy called Ji Ling (寄灵) at Luoyan Wei (洛安韦) Mansion. He is a cheerful young mage from the Shilin(侍鳞) Sect, always carrying a cloth doll. But when she sneaks into the sect after he gets hurt, she sees something terrible. Ji Ling dies in front of her. The Puppet's Heart
Ji Ling is not a normal boy. He laughs easily, loves giving flowers, and knows how to cheer someone up. When Lu Wuyi feels sad, he tells her to make a circle with her hands and look through it to see something beautiful. She feels a strange connection, as if they met years ago when she saved a little fox at the foot of a mountain. But that memory is not really his. It belongs to someone else.
The truth is cruel. Ji Ling has no heartbeat or blood. He is a wooden doll brought to life by the Dragon God, Chi Wen (螭吻). Chi Wen lost his divine power and hides inside the Shilin Sect. Using a ring filled with demon energy, he creates puppets to do his work. He gives each puppet a piece of his own youthful memories and false life. Ji Ling is one of many. When a puppet breaks or dies, Chi Wen simply makes a new one and gives it the same memories.
Every time Ji Ling returns from a mission, Chi Wen extracts his memories to learn what happened. If the puppet is destroyed, a servant named Li Jie (厉劫) throws it away and builds another. The new puppet looks the same, remembers the same things, and believes it is the same person. But it is not. It is just another copy. Lu Wuyi does not know this when she falls for him. She sees kindness and warmth. She does not see the strings.
The Hidden Truth
After Ji Ling dies in front of her, Lu Wuyi learns the awful secret. Her destined person was never the puppet boy. It is Chi Wen, the creator. Years ago, she and Chi Wen shared a beautiful story. She does not remember it clearly, but the feeling lingers. Chi Wen, however, remembers. He created Ji Ling in his own young image – a pure, lively boy who loves life. Each puppet is a way for him to hold onto his own lost youth.
But is Chi Wen truly the Dragon God? Ji Ling’s oldest memory tells a different tale. In that memory, he is a little fox saved by the Dragon God at the foot of a mountain. Since Ji Ling’s memories are actually Chi Wen’s memories from his youth, this means Chi Wen once believed he was a fox. That suggests his real form is not a dragon at all. He might have taken the title of Dragon God, or he might be something else entirely.
The ring he wears holds demon energy, not divine power. He cannot leave the sect without risk. He sends puppets to do his work. A real god would not need such tricks.
