The First Madam’s own life was not happy. Marriage into the Lin Mansion (林府) brought no love from her husband; his favorite concubine caused her to lose her child. Still, she did not punish the younger generation for that pain. She raised children from the main wife and the concubine, from the first branch and the second. She taught Lin Xiulai (林秀莱) accounting and household management, even though Lin Xiulai’s mother had harmed her.
