The first six episodes of Fate Chooses You (佳偶天成) felt like a promise. A contract marriage, a shocking betrayal, and a lone woman riding into the capital to avenge her unjustly accused husband—it was familiar but gripping. Viewers, including this one, devoured that opening arc. But then, something strange happened. After the revenge was settled, the story didn't deepen; it just moved locations.
The hero, Lu Qianqiao (陆千乔), needed new body parts. The heroine, Xin Mei (辛湄), needed answers about her lost memories. Their individual paths still made sense. Yet the audience’s excitement flatlined. Why? Because the show stopped trusting its core couple and began throwing in a parade of supporting characters who turn every new place into a recycled battleground. What could have been a fresh, character-driven drama now feels like a checklist of fantasy tropes on a touring map.
A Logical Journey That Lost Its Soul
If you track only Lu and Xin, their decisions remain perfectly reasonable. After completing the “flesh exchange” in their marriage, Lu needs to undergo a “bone exchange” in Chongling (崇灵) Valley. His disciple, Su Taiyi (苏太乙), has already prepared all the materials there. So Lu heads to the valley—logical. Later, for the “blood exchange,” he learns that the magical object called Biri Fan (蔽日幡) can help. That object now belongs to Zuo Yingying of the Qinghong Sect (青虹教) in Bei Xiang (北襄). Again, his journey makes sense.
Meanwhile, Xin originally left her mountain to attend the Elixir Appraisal Conference, hoping to win an Immortality Pill for her dying master. But after the Chongling Valley events, she discovers that Lu might have tampered with her memory. She and her fellow disciple divert to Wei (渭) County, confirm that Lu is her husband, and learn she once killed her way to the capital for his revenge. Naturally, she chases after him to Bei Xiang for answers. The heroine’s logic is flawless.
So why does this rational plotting feel so empty? Because rationality alone does not create emotional engagement. The first six episodes worked because every action carried personal stakes—her fury, his hidden pain. After that, the story becomes a geography lesson. We watch them move from valley to northern town, but the internal tension evaporates. They are following a map, not a heart.
The Tournament of Extras Who Overstay Their Welcome
The trouble starts at Chongling Valley, where a crowd of immortals and rogues gathers for the Immortality Pill. That’s fine. A single objective brings everyone together once. But then the scene shifts to Bei Xiang, and suddenly the same kind of forced convergence happens again. This time, a thief who has fallen into demonic madness steals a book, and every major sect dispatches elite teams to chase him down. Both Lu and Xin end up traveling with different demonic madmen.
What should have been a direct confrontation between Lu and the Qinghong Sect becomes a messy free-for-all. The scriptwriter, eager to pull all the major sects back into the picture, uses the demonic madmen as cheap glue to stick these parties together. It feels less like fate and more like a work schedule. You can almost hear the production meeting: “We need to use these character actors again—let’s just put them in a new background.”
This is the real killer. When supporting characters follow the leads from one location to another with the same hostile intentions, it stops being a story and starts being a rotation. The audience recognizes the pattern: new place, same old fight, slightly different lighting. No one wonders what happens next because they already know. The gang will clash, someone will spout a secret, and then everyone will move to a third location for another round. Anticipation dies.
What a Waste of Two Magnetic Performers
Let’s be honest about what this show had in its favor. The actor playing Lu Qianqiao commands a massive and devoted fanbase. His face and presence are precisely the kind that make fantasy romances soar. And the actress playing Xin Mei? She delivered memorable turns as Jiao Liqiao in Mysterious Lotus Casebook (莲花楼) and as Hualan in The Story of Minglan (知否知否). She knows how to play strength wrapped in vulnerability. Together, they have the tools to ignite the screen.
But tools need material. Halfway through , the material becomes a series of scenic detours. Instead of digging into the fascinating implications of memory tampering—what does it mean to love someone who might have rewritten your past?—the show sends the leads off to fetch another body part. Instead of letting the couple’s distrust and desire simmer in close quarters, it peppers the road with forgettable antagonists who exist only to prolong runtime.
A mid-season slump is not unusual for long fantasy dramas. But this one hurts more because the foundation was solid. The revenge arc proved that the writers could balance action and emotion. The leads proved they could carry heavy scenes. The audience proved they were ready to invest. To then squander that goodwill by turning the second half into a tour of interchangeable mystical locations—that is not a creative misstep. It is a betrayal of the story’s own best self. Lu and Xin deserved a conflict that grew organically from their bond, not a chain of forced encounters with the same old faces in new costumes.
