Guzhen County Museum Hosts Its First Hanfu Contest

On October 3 the museum in Guzhen county, Anhui, handed its main hall to its first Hanfu contest. The county’s culture, tourism and sports bureau sponsored the event, with the museum and the county cultural center running it, and the programme was built to put the garment at the centre of a public holiday: Hanfu as the subject, the museum floor as the stage, and residents and visitors as the audience. Two groups competed, one for children and one, called the Fenhua group, for adults.

Two Groups Share One Runway

Contestants lined up for a group photograph and then walked a Hanfu parade through the museum hall and the space around it, the sweep of sleeves and the set of the shoulders sounding the tone before a single score was given. Zhang Han, the museum’s deputy director, began the programme by welcoming the contestants and framing the contest as a way to carry Hanfu culture and to show cultural confidence through dress.

A guzheng piece and a solo dance opened the bill, and the children’s group went first, moving through Hanfu display, a formal walk and a talent turn before the audience. Between the rounds the programme broke into set pieces, among them the scene show “Guo Shang Fenghua” and a Chu-style dance, “Feiniao Ji”. The adult group then took the stage with a fuller command of form, etiquette and bearing, and further acts, from the dance “Xiaocheng Yao” to a group dance and the Huagudeng lantern dance, carried the hall through to the close.

Each group awarded one first prize, two second and three third, and the judges also handed out separate titles for best styling, best talent and best stage presence. The best-styling award pushed the focus onto what the contestants wore: the choice of garment form, the hair ornaments, the makeup and the overall look were all treated as things a panel could score.

That choice set the contest apart from a plain walk-on. By making the coordinated look a scored category, the organisers asked contestants to think about how a garment and its styling fit together, which is closer to how Hanfu is worn outside a competition and gives the award a use beyond the day itself.

More Hanfu Around Guyang City

It was one part of a wider holiday package. Over the same Mid-Autumn and National Day break the museum ran a complementary programme, including the Tianwen (天问) exhibition on Chinese ideas of the cosmos and free screenings of patriotic and reunion-themed films; at the Guyang City scenic area, October 3 brought a Hanfu parade, a runway show and a talent contest of its own, and visitors who went out in Hanfu could compete for prizes of cultural merchandise.

Running the museum contest and the scenic-area events on the same day let the county spread Hanfu across more than one venue, so a resident who missed the museum stage could still meet the costume a short walk away. The two sites shared a single view of the holiday, with the garment as the common thread.

The organisers read the first contest as a working example of what a county museum can do as a public cultural venue and as a small push for culture-tourism integration. Reviewing what worked, the museum said it would keep teaming up with partner bodies to bring out more cultural programmes and to keep Hanfu within reach of ordinary residents.

For a county staging a first-time event, the value lies less in the prizes than in the pattern: a museum opening its floor, a government bureau backing the bill, and a holiday audience already willing to dress for the occasion. Whether the contest returns to the same hall, the template it set is now on the record.
