Hanfu Fabrics

Hi everyone! What fabrics do you use for your homemade hanfu?
I have the hardest time finding suitable fabrics that are:
– accurate to the periods, made of natural fibers,
AND
– have pretty patterns and flowiness.
Internet is a great place, but mostly polyester and other artificial fabrics…

I am just working on a hanfu-like dress from viscose. Or you can try linen, but it´s a bit expensive. If you can find a kind of cotton that doesn´t wrinkle it could be the best option.

Yes, any non-stretchy or overly stretchy fabric will do. I have been known to cheat. I use bed sheets. They are cotton-like, soft, and pleatable. Chiffon is great for summer look, but use as outer layer, please. 😉

@carottie I have good plans to have not too expensive linen, so that’s cool. but linen wrikles like hell! :p
@liangyuzuan Yez, I tried bedsheet-like cotton, but it doesn’t fall nicely, not heavy enough for outer garments. So yeah, i’m resolved to cheat with chiffon and polyester satin and such silk-like substitutes… Did they use wool for anything ?

Wool is for outer layers in winter. Ming Dynasty style would be good to study. Cloaks.

Oh I forgot to mention poly cotton. They don’t wrinkle like cotton, but is lightweight. 😀

Bedsheet cotton is better for ru or shan, I think.

First of all, thank you for making this post and thank you for all the useful comments! 😊
I’m struggling to find fabrics too (look good, accurate and not expensive), but my main issue is that I’m living on a very strict budget so I can’t really spend money on expensive fabrics like silk or linen. After reading the comments, I think I’m gonna try finding some cotton that looks good enough for the Hanfu I’m planning to do.

Hey! how do you guys respond to individual comments? ^^ I’m glad this topic was useful to some of you.
I recently acquired a certain amount of polyester chiffon, polyester satin crepe, a cashmere silk and linen. It’ gonna be hell to cut straight for all the slippery fabrics, but I hope it’s gonna be worth it in the end ^^

Zhuge Jin

Hi all,
Do you have any info on how the Zhuge Jin or Guanjin (Zhuge Liang’s Hat) was made? I mean as historically accurate as possible. Not the super large and square version we see in some dramas and in the 3rd picture. I guess I could get away with a cardboard and wire lining, but I was really wondering how they did it historically.

So no-one has any idea? ^^ I guess I’ll go with the second form, with a foam stuffing and quilting… maybe. I really think we lack historical evidence for this “hat”, I even read that Zhuge Liang was likely wearing “Ge Jin” , that is a linen scarf, and it was mistaken as “Zhu Ge Jin” in later texts. But then the shape is so iconic that the character would be hard to recognise if I go for a scarf… I still have the feather fan, though.

Look what I made 😊

I finally had the opportunity to wear my hanfu at a local Fantasy Convention. My husband is Zhuge Liang😁. I made both our costumes. For the lady, linen zhongyi under a quju Shenyi made of pink satin crepe (polyester because silk is expensive 😆) For the gentleman, linen zhongyi, zhiju shenyi, beizi and of course you would have recognized my Zhuge jin. Enjoy! And feel free to ask me questions.

@sskessa Thank you so much! the shenyi took a weekend to make I think. Between pattern tracing and adding the trim. I didn’t bind the seams, though. For the pink one I used French seams, and the white one I just zigzag stiched the sides.

Fencing in hanfu

If you need references, the hanfu I’m wearring is the Triple Crane model in the shop, I just removed the ruffles at the bottom of the skirt.

First challenge this year: I’m selected for the French National Stage Fencing Championship. I’m going to perform a solo entitled “Autumn Wind Sweeps th fallen leaves”, wearing hanfu but using western fencing techniques.
I hope to increase hanfu representation and bring both cultures together.

I would agree with you. Even though lots of them seem to be for tang dynasty (peony, ribbons, and that delicate golden hairpin), but there are some that can be used for any style (pearl hairpins, the twin hp or the one in middle).

Bronze medal

Hey guys! Remember I told you about my participating in a Stage Fencing championship wearing hanfu? Well here it is, got myself a Bronze medal in my category! ^^

My performance was entitled “Automn wind sweeps the leaves”. It started with a dance, then finishes with a fighting sequence with several invisible opponents. That’s called a solo.
My music was “Upward to the moon 左手指月” from the drama Ashes of love.

Dying methods

Hi all you knowledgable folks! Does anyone have well sourced information on how ancient Chinese people dyed their fabrics? Did they use the same plants as in Europe, like madder, woad, kermes, murex shells, etc? How did they make the imperial back and red of the Han emperors? and such questions. Thanks!

I looked up some information on how to get Han dynasty period black, it may not always be accurate but I hope it helps. There are approximately three methods available. The first one involves dyeing with indigo dye to achieve a deep blue color, followed by using extracts from yellow wood and bayberry peel as a dye mixture to achieve a dark blue shade, resulting in a profound hue. The second method entails soaking bluegrass leaves in water, then immersing them together with alum and gallnuts for dyeing. The third method, perhaps simpler and more practical, involves extracting dye from the Chinese sumac tree, combining it with alum and warming it together with the fabric for dyeing. Then, a single dyeing process with a certain concentration of indigo dye is applied.

My strawberry blossom

Went to a medieval festival yesterday with my brand new strawberry blossom hanfu. The qixiong style really is bothersome, I kept adjusting the ties and it still keeps slipping. Next time I’ll use the invisible straps they gave me. But that’s really cheating isn’t it? 😅

Persimmon delight

Got myself a lucky pack. Was not disappointed 🥰.

I didn’t even notice this model in the shop and it’s delightful. I don’t even know it’s name. But it has gorgeous watercolor persimmon patterns on th collar and the mamianqun. Plus I just happen to have the perfect earring to go with it.

It might just be casual enough to wear on a daily basis. I wonder…😏 What do you think? Would it be too much for work or grocery shopping?😇

I think it’s Golden Tangerine(shows up in shop>season and holiday>new arrivals. Love the earrings. Personally I feel like it can be casual wear outside of work but that’s just me. I feel like I’m so used to looking at hanfu that I won’t think it’s strange if I see you in the streets lol.

I don’t know what the original model looked like, but the dress fits you beautifully!
Hanfu is so cool in that it can look different but still flattering on lots of different bodies.

It did fit, but I did feel like the strings to tie the top were too short, and the white part was also slightly weird in the armpits, but it was fixed just by altering the length of the straps. The skirt was nice though! My first mamianqun!!!

I bought the base on Aliexpress. I added the veil myself. I highly recommend using a natural fiber cloth. Polyester is soo warm and un breathing…
