Love Beyond the Grace: Desire Traps the Schemer

Love Beyond the Grace: Desire Traps the Schemer

In Love Beyond the Grace (白日提灯), the spirit lord He Simu (贺思慕) has swapped senses twice with her ally Duan Xu (段胥). The first time, she nearly perished after Fang Chang (方昌) betrayed her. The second time, she survived an attack from Song Xingyu (宋兴雨), the master of Jiuling Dian (亼灵殿). Each exchange costs her all spiritual power—a secret only she and Duan Xu know. When betrayal struck, she teased Duan Xu as a suspect.

But in truth, Fang Chang’s clumsy plot revealed the real enemy. It was never the puppet-master Song Xingyu (宋兴雨), nor Bai Sanxing (白散行) imprisoned in the Jiugong (九宫) Labyrinth. The one who truly wants the Wanling (万灵) Lantern—and has loved He Simu for 400 years—is her own right-hand man, Yan Ke (晏柯).

A Foolish Betrayal

Love Beyond the Grace: Desire Traps the Schemer

Fang Chang, disguised as a minor spirit, kept urging a ghost named Chen Ying (沉英) to seize the Wanling Lantern. That lantern represents the supreme authority of the spirit realm’s ruler. For four centuries, many wandering spirits resented He Simu’s reign, but those who dared to challenge her were annihilated. The survivors either lacked power or could not find her weakness. Fang Chang’s trap, however, was laughably crude. He set it off just as He Simu was about to regain her powers—an act of sheer stupidity.

He knew that failure meant a terrible fate, yet he pushed forward anyway. Why? Because someone stood behind him. That patron could not be Song Xingyu, the fugitive master of Jiuling Dian. Song has been on the run for so long that even the elite searchers of Xingqing Gong (星卿宫) cannot find him. He would never risk directing a deputy like Fang Chang. More likely, Fang Chang convinced Song to join his scheme. But then who found Song Xingyu in hiding? Only a higher-ranked leader could track him. In the entire spirit world, few have that ability. The prime suspect is Yan Ke.

He Simu once described Yan Ke as power-hungry. A former prince who rebelled against the throne three times—each rebellion crushed, each time sentenced to dismemberment—his obsession with authority never died. He would never settle for the position of right chancellor. She knew this and deliberately used his ambition to make him serve her, assigning him to enforce the Jinbi (金壁) Law. But Fang Chang’s betrayal suggests a new promise: a different spirit lord offered him greater rewards. And everyone knows Yan Ke has secretly loved He Simu for 400 years. He wants both the throne and the woman.

Power and Love

Yan Ke chose to strike when He Simu lost her powers after the second sense exchange. His goal was to minimize damage, to take the Wanling Lantern with the least bloodshed. He does not want her dead—he wants her captive, both as his queen and his trophy. That is why he manipulated Fang Chang and Song Xingyu from the shadows. But here is the fatal miscalculation: neither Fang Chang nor Song Xingyu shares his restraint. They want He Simu destroyed, not subdued.

When Yan Ke punishes Fang Chang for his failures, do not mistake it for justice or karma. It is simple rage. Fang Chang acted on his own vicious impulses instead of following Yan Ke’s careful plan. The punishment is not for betraying He Simu—it is for disobeying Yan Ke. This distinction reveals everything. Yan Ke sees himself as a master strategist, but his pawns have their own greed. He cannot control their desire for absolute elimination, because he himself is blinded by his own lust for power and possession.

What Yan Ke fails to understand is that He Simu became the spirit lord not merely through strength. Her true power lies in her lack of desire. Without personal cravings clouding her judgment, she sees every subordinate clearly—their motives, their weaknesses, their hidden loyalties. She knew about Yan Ke’s obsession with power from the start. That is precisely why she never trusted him completely. And that is why she hid her own vulnerability inside the very object he covets most.

No Desire, No Trap

The Wanling Lantern contains He Simu’s fatal weakness. Only a person who would never destroy the lantern could discover that secret. Who fits that description? Someone who craves the lantern’s power above all else. Yan Ke, the power-obsessed lover, would guard the lantern with his life. He would never smash it, never risk losing its authority. Therefore, he will never find her weakness. She designed this trap specifically for him, knowing his nature better than he knows himself.

While Yan Ke smiles in the shadows, believing he is orchestrating the perfect takeover, he has already walked into a cage of her making. His 400-year obsession—both for her and for the throne—has made him predictable. Every move he makes, every pawn he deploys, she anticipated years ago. The betrayal, the ambush, the timing of her power loss—none of it surprised her. She allowed it to happen because she needed to expose him. Now his true face is visible to all who matter.

In the end, Yan Ke remains trapped inside his own worldview. He assumes everyone else is as hungry for power as he is. He cannot imagine a ruler without desire, a leader who sees through lies because she has nothing to gain from them. He congratulates himself on his cunning, unaware that He Simu has already won. The lantern still hangs in her hand. The spirits still bow to her. And the man who loved her for 400 years? He has become just another lesson: desire is the leash that binds the schemer, not the key to the throne.
