In ancient Jinling (金陵), Xu Lanxiang builds a quiet life beside Lin Jinqi (林锦岐). She runs a household, hides old wounds, and never speaks of the past. Then she gives birth to her first child. Xu Lanxiang listens. The number twenty, the broken engagement, the hidden burial—each detail fits. This is the Shen family grave she has long sought. Lin Jinqi is the righteous man who gathered the dead when others turned away. Her knees give way. She falls beside the unnamed earth and weeps without grace or restraint. Lin Jinqi is confused. Why should this grave break her? She manages a breath and says the Shen family once showed her kindness. She does not reveal everything. Still, something inside her loosens. She adds that giving birth to Lanxiang was quick and kind. She barely suffered at all.
Lin Jinqi freezes. Xu Lanxiang claimed her mother had suffered when bearing her. The two accounts cannot both be true. Suspicion returns, sharper than before. He searches out her old paintings, calligraphy, and account books—clues that might prove she is Shen Jialan. He means to confront her. Yet when their eyes meet, words become unnecessary. Xu Lanxiang says, “You are confused, my lord.” Lin Jinqi does not demand a confession. Instead, he burns the evidence in front of her. “You are Xu Lanxiang,” he says. “We are a husband and wife bound by fortune and disaster.” Shen Jialan, he decides, should stay buried with the Shen family.
That choice does not erase the truth. It simply changes who owns it. Xu Lanxiang understands that Lin Jinqi is not asking her to forget. He is asking her to live.
