Bailu and Chenglei Cdrama Mo Li Hits 27,208 Heat Index

Period drama Mo Li, starring Bailu and Chenglei, premiered on Tencent Video on June 9, 2026, hitting a platform heat index of 21,000 within fifteen minutes of launch and climbing to 27,208 within three days. Pre-launch reservations crossed 6.05 million, and the first day saw fans spending nearly nine million yuan on virtual "cloud screening" group buys. Eleven mid-roll ads in a single episode set a 2026 platform ad-revenue record, underlining the show's commercial value before the first week was over.

Story Setup and Pre-Launch Buzz

The story follows Ye Li (Bailu), trapped for eight years after her sect was sealed shut, who is granted an imperial marriage to Prince Ding Mo Xiuyao (Chenglei) by the Empress Dowager. The dual-protagonist power-play and mutual-salvation setup fueled pre-release buzz, with the trailer pulling strong engagement from the romance and palace-drama core audience. Bailu's casting was a major draw, given her track record in period roles, and Chenglei's restrained performance in the teasers built anticipation among fans of the subgenre.

Behind the platform numbers, however, audience reception has been sharply divided. After launch, one-star reviews on Douban ran above 67% of the total, sparking a wider industry conversation about the gap between data performance and audience sentiment. Critics cited pacing issues in the middle episodes and a script structure that they said over-relied on coincidence. The platform's response was to amplify marketing and accelerate the release schedule, banking on continued word-of-mouth and crossover IP products to sustain engagement through the controversy.

The IP Crossover Play

Distinct from the broadcast cycle, Chinese original designer-toy brand Wudu Youou announced a deep collaboration with Tencent Video to launch officially licensed Mo Li plush dolls and merchandise, an example of period-drama IP extending into physical product lines. The collaboration positions the show within a "watch, buy, display" loop that has become standard for major Chinese period productions, with plush figures, character stands, replica accessories, and limited-edition packaging running through the show's broadcast window.

The model treats the drama as the entry point rather than the product itself. Fans who buy a Mo Li plush are likely to revisit the show for emotional context, while viewers who finish the show are nudged toward the merchandise to extend their engagement. Wudu Youou's existing collector community, primarily in the 18-30 age range, overlaps heavily with the show's target demographic, which made the partnership efficient from a distribution perspective. The play-and-collect loop, watch-buy-display, is now central to the commercial value of period dramas, which increasingly compete on the strength of full-chain IP operations rather than viewership alone.
