In the first five episodes of Love Beyond the Grace (白日提灯), the audience is thrown into a web of suspicion. Who is the spy leaking military secrets from inside the Da Liang (大梁) army? Most viewers point fingers at Han Lingqiu (韩令秋), a man of Bei Chong (北崇) origin. But they are wrong. The real traitor is not the outsider you fear. It is the wealthy merchant you trust. This is the story of a mask so perfect that even the spy himself forgot his own face.
The Wrong Suspect
After Duan Xu (段胥) captures Shuo Zhou (蒴州), he sends for He Simu (贺思慕). On the road, Bei Chong troops ambush her. Later, the army’s grain stores burn. A plan to blow up the Guan River reaches the enemy before the fuse is lit. Every sign points to a mole inside Da Liang. And Han Lingqiu looks guilty from his first scene.
He arrives in Liang Zhou (椋州) a full day before the main force. He watches a prisoner take her own life without stopping her. On the battlefield, he sees a red bird shot down and whispers a Bei Chong proverb: “When the red bird comes, all living things burn.” Then his head splits with pain, and he falls. He is, in fact, a native of Bei Chong. At fourteen, he lost his memory, was adopted by a Han couple, and climbed the ranks to become a military captain.
But he is not the spy. The real traitor is Lin Jun, the rich merchant who swore loyalty to Duan Xu and promised to defend Shuo Zhou with the Tabai (踏白) Army. Or, to be precise, it is Number Fifteen of Tian Zhixiao (天知晓) wearing Lin Jun’s (林钧) face. He is a master of disguise. Even Lin Jun’s own family would not spot the difference.
The Merchant’s Mask
When Duan Xu attacked Shuo Zhou, he painted pigeons red and pretended they were a curse from Cang Shen (苍神). The Bei Chong defenders fled in terror. But this act desecrated the Cangyan Jing (苍言经), the holy book of the north. It drew the attention of the Bei Chong high priest, who ordered Tian Zhixiao to investigate. Fifteen received the mission. He kidnapped the real Lin Jun and took his place.
From inside Da Liang’s camp, he fed intelligence to Awolqi, the Bei Chong commander. The attack on He Simu, the burning of the granary, the ambush on the supply convoy—all came from his hand. He thought he was invisible. But Duan Xu smelled something familiar on him. Not a scent. A presence. The same cold, hollow energy of a man who had been broken and rebuilt as a tool.
Duan Xu did not confront him immediately. He set a trap. On New Year’s Eve, during a martial contest, he exposed Fifteen in front of the entire army. The mask came off. But what remained was not a monster. It was a young man who had never owned a name.
A Life Without a Face
Fifteen was born in Da Liang. But his parents believed in Cang Shen and the doctrine of “low blood.” They gave him to Tian Zhixiao as an offering. To cleanse his bloodline and find a reason to live, he became a chess piece. He had no name. Only a number. He wore a hundred faces but never his own. That is the real tragedy of the spy in Love Beyond the Grace.
After his exposure, he took Duan Xu hostage and fled toward the Bei Chong camp. Duan Xu let him. He used the escape to get close to Awolqi for an assassination attempt. Then the two ran to the wilderness for a final duel. Duan Xu asked him, “Brother Fifteen, tell me—why do you believe in the master? Why do you believe in Cang Shen? You are so good at lying. Aren’t you afraid that you have also been lied to?”
The question cut through him. In that moment of doubt, his guard dropped. Duan Xu’s sword, Po Wang Jian (破妄剑), took his throat. That blade is called the Sword of Illusion-Breaking. Its nature is mercy. Everyone who dies by it loses their obsession at once and passes straight into the next life. Perhaps, in the next round, Fifteen will live happy and free.
