At the beginning of the Qing dynasty, the Manchu and Han peoples experienced a process of cultural integration from a violent conflict to a long period of friction and then gradually.
There were several characteristics.
1. Men shaved their heads and wore braids in Manchu costumes, while women still wore their original hair in buns and Han costumes.
2. Wear Manchu costumes in life, but after death can wear hanfu.
3. Children were allowed to wear hanfu
4. Officials wear the official uniform of the Qing Dynasty, but the subordinate service is still the dress of the Ming Dynasty.
5. Buddhist transcendence and other things, are still in accordance with traditional Han Buddhist customs, not from the Manchu customs.

Mamian Qun fabric, most of the use of woven gold or jacquard technology. That is, the fabric has texture on the surface.
I recommend purchasing fabric specifically for Mamian Qun, because the obvious folds and golden pattern are the most important features of Mamian Qun.

I think that as loose as hanfu gets, it’s always rather fitting at the collar and waist. Perhaps it seems “loose” because of the different fabric choices in OP’s image and the artifact recreation.

That’d be an inner zhongyi later, TWO outer layersand skirt—you can see a Jin dynasty quling zhongyi there (the white part), plus a pink or peach colored ru with darker collar and sleeve cuffs. The third outer layer is the transparent chiffon one on the outside; it’s kind of hard to see but you can see the collar of it beside the collar of the inner ru. Skirt looks like a poqun.

absolutely! there’s no real difference between a qixiong or qiyao skirt other than length, these are just two different ways of wearing them—you can wear a poqun or zhequn or baidiequn in qixiong or qiyao, to your preference. qiyao and qixiong aren’t structurally different at all.

You’re gonna want stiffening interfacing for that! It’s pretty easy to find online, you’d just sew it in between the two layers of the waist belt/waist head and it should keep it from folding over.

Finally finished
I finally finished this skirt. It was supposed to look similar to Zhang Ziyi’s costume from ep 13 in Rebel princess (I wanted really colourful skirt). Unfortunately, I bought too little fabric (2m instead of 2.5m) so the pleats are only under the belt and the skirt itself is not very pleated. (Also, I made it from just one part since I don’t ride a horse.) It does not look much like hanfu. My father even said that it is like from Tibet or Turkestan. Well, never mind. I still love it.❤️

I really depends on the type of skirt. I think there is a very mathematical ratio with pleat depth, skirt length and nb of pleats for them to stay till the bottom hem…But I don’t know it ^^

Might be cause of the hanfu template itself. If not, ancient people will be adding weight on top of the dress by hanging accessory on the waist to at least have something heavier pressing down on the dress. They can either be jinbu or gongtao. If it’s larger and strong wind I don’t think that adding anything will do much, but decent wind, it might help.

I think it helps adjust the length of the pant legs. And it just holds better bellow the knees, where the calf muscle prevent the sting from slipping.

I know that the wealthy people used silk but common people used hemp or linen and as far as I know they did not wear short sleeves and trousers and most of them spent whole day in the sun.

In ancient times, multi-layered hanfu was probably worn only for more formal occasions. For everyday life, I suspect a single piece of clothing was usually worn.

Linen is perfect for ho weather, since in protects you skin from direct sunligh and evacuated your sweat, since it’s a plant fiber, made for transporting liquids ;). I don’t think silk was very suited for hot weather, though.

Do you think that there was some functional difference between Shenyi and Ruqun in the Han dynasty? Shenyi seems less practical to me so was it more appropriate for some special occasions and social events? Or were they just different styles with the same use?

My personal opinion is that Shenyi was worn more by the upper class at the time for specific occasions and was more formal, while Ruqun was obviously more suitable for everyday wear and activities.

Hi, I would like to make a linen skirt (most probably, still thinking about ramie but I´m not sure). I want to make it as much authentic for the early periods (Eastern Zhou/Han dynasty) as it can be. Also I want it to be a commoner style.
Should I make Zhequn style? Or do you have some other suggestions? I read that commoners used light colors, so are there some colors that I shouldn´t use at all?

I think you can’t go wrong with Zhequn. BUt on a linen, it is going to be an endeavour! ^^ If you go for commoner, I think any shade of brown, or any pastel color is the way to go. Just think of it as not adding enough dye to decrease the cost of the material. Or a natural linen maybe?

skirt pleats
Hi, I have sewn a linen pleated skirt -the ruqun style with 5 cm pleats, but they do not stay flat. The difference between waist and hip circumference makes them detached. Pleating them not straight but askew seems too hard (I would have to do them in different angles each). Do you have any tricks for this? Thanks.😁

linen is hell for pleating… i would suggest top stitchi the pleats. that’s a lot more work but I think the only way to have them behave…
