“Jin Chan Dao: China Intangible Heritage Textile Inspiration Vault” — a special exhibition of Baxiu (Wuxi Wedding Embroidery) — opened at the H&M China House of H&M on Huaihai Middle Road in Shanghai, running through the end of July. Co-presented by H&M and Xinpin Zhizaoju (New Product Manufacturing Bureau), the show displays over 20 antique embroidery panels alongside contemporary reinterpretations, tracing the cross-stitch techniques of this national-level ICH craft from its origins in the Ba-Yu mountain region of Wuxi County, Chongqing, into modern fashion contexts.

Wuxi Wedding Embroidery, also called Baxiu or folk cross-stitch embroidery, originates from the Ningchang Ancient Town area and was inscribed on China’s national ICH list in 2021. Its defining technique is cross-stitching without a pre-drawn pattern — artisans count individual fabric threads and follow oral formulas maintained across generations to produce symmetric geometric and botanical motifs featuring phoenixes, lotus blossoms, and auspicious characters. Each piece intentionally leaves unfilled negative spaces, reflecting the folk principle that fullness invites loss. Historically, local girls began learning the craft at age eleven or twelve, stitching bed curtains, pillow cases, and dowry pieces for their own weddings — hence the name “wedding embroidery.” The exhibition breaks down these stitching methods with magnified displays and step-by-step diagrams, showing visitors how each needlework style evolved from practical decoration to artistic expression. Red-walled display alcoves and raw wood shelving within the H&M space create a visual contrast between heritage craft and contemporary retail.

Unlike conventional ICH exhibitions, “Jin Chan Dao” deliberately merges art with commerce. Xinpin Zhizaoju, a founding member of the Shanghai Fashion Promotion Center’s Cultural Heritage Digitalization Alliance, launched the third “Ba Yun × Future” Wuxi Wedding Embroidery Creative Design Contest alongside the exhibition, calling for global designers to reinterpret traditional motifs for fashion apparel, home goods, and material innovation. Previous editions have drawn entries from design schools and independent studios across China and Southeast Asia.

“This marks a milestone for ‘Chinese ICH, shared with the world,'” said Zhang Wei, CEO of Xinpin Zhizaoju. An H&M Greater China representative said the brand welcomes the opportunity to introduce China’s diverse craft heritage to mainstream audiences through the House of H&M platform. The exhibition is free and open to the public at the B1 level of H&M’s Huaihai Middle Road flagship store, accessible through the main entrance on the pedestrian shopping street.
