Chinese knot accessories

Korean hanbok traditionally goes with the knotted norigae tassel. Is there an era/dynasty or clothing style that used Chinese knotting for more than buttons?

It got really popular in the Qing dynasty and was used to decorate all sorts of accessories and stuff (so clothing too), like fans, sachets, cases. Before that it had more symbolic artistic status I think? As in it wasn’t used as much for personal decoration.

Waist ornaments in general are called yaopei. In almost all cases, yaopeis have jade things. For sure, this types of belt (image) was used in Tang Dynasty to tie male clothing, it might have even started in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. I think I saw some jinbu (the dangly jades to hold the skirt down) with minor knots on them. BUT… As for when did they get popular and more included in outfits, I agree it was the Qing dynasty. The knot buttons were only popular in Qing dynasty, too.

Plain Robe (素纱禅衣, Sù shā chán yī)

Since I’m a very beginner sewer, I picked a very simple style. P68 in 中国古代服饰结构图集 (ISBN 9787574108943) is 素纱禅衣 (Sù shā chán yī, “plain yarn zen clothes”???).

The neck area and torso length numbers from the book were fine but I used my own measurements for waist, sleeve length, and height. I triple checked that there were no ties in this pattern and also that other patterns in the book had ties, so the book doesn’t expect you to add ties as needed, so there are no ties in my robe. So, I made a very simple belt to which I added a cell phone pocket. 😎

Visualizing from flat is difficult for me, so I needed the paper model. Everything should have pockets! 😁
