5 Roles’ Endings in Love Beyond the Grace

Duan Xu (段胥) dies. He Simu (贺思慕) loses her power. A thousand arrows pierce Chen Ying (沉英). Only one walks away smiling. The point-release finale of Love Beyond the Grace (白日提灯) has dropped its final previews, and the fates of its characters twist in brutal, unexpected ways. From the bloody halls of Nandu (南都) to the ghostly pages of the Guowang Ce (鬼王册), here is how every story ends—and who truly wins.

1. Fang Xianye (方先野)

5 Roles’ Endings in Love Beyond the Grace

Fang Xianye dies in the imperial court, his skull crushed against a pillar. He does it to protect Duan Xu. Someone leaked the late emperor’s final edict: When Duan Xu returns to Nandu, kill him for failing to save the throne. Fang Xianye had held that edict for a full year. He could not bring himself to execute his friend, but he also could not let go of the high position the late emperor had promised him.

That hesitation became a trap. An enemy stole the edict and made it public. To undo his mistake and honor his original purpose for entering politics, Fang Xianye chose death. He claimed the edict was a forgery—his own jealousy toward Duan Xu’s military achievements. Then he ran his head into the pillar. His body fell, and the court fell silent.

He did not die for Duan Xu alone. He died for his own lost nerve. A year of indecision cost him everything, and the only way to buy back his honor was with his life.

2. Chen Ying

Chen Ying suffers the most gruesome death. He leads one thousand soldiers against tens of thousands of enemy troops from the Chong (崇) clan. They shoot him with so many arrows that his body becomes a pincushion. He does not fall immediately. His obsession with victory keeps him standing, even after his heart stops.

That obsession turns him into a wandering ghost. His name appears in the Guowang Ce, the ghost king’s register. He Simu finds it there—not because she hears his call, as the preview tricks you into believing. She sees his name written in ink that only she can read. She rushes to him, but she is too late for his life.

Do not mourn him yet. She keeps his soul for several years, feeding it with her own energy. Then the Guowang Deng (鬼王灯)—also called the Wanling Deng (万灵灯)—chooses him. He becomes the next spirit master, taking He Simu’s old job. She steps down. He steps up. Death is not the end for Chen Ying; it is a promotion.

3. Duan Xu

Duan Xu does not die from an enemy sword. He dies from his own ambition. The State Preceptor Feng Yi (风夷) warned him: the five-sense exchange with He Simu had backfired. His body was rotting from the inside. He would never live to old age. But Duan Xu could not let go of the Guanhe Shiwu Zhou (关河十七州)—seventeen prefectures still under enemy control.

He burned his remaining life on one campaign after another. When he finally took back the last prefecture, he had almost nothing left. Then he made a terrible, beautiful decision. He argued with He Simu—a screaming fight—and then used every last bit of his lifespan to exchange all five senses with her at once.

For the first time in her existence, He Simu felt color, warmth, smell, touch, and taste together. She laughed at the beauty of the mortal world. While she was still laughing, Duan Xu’s body gave out. He choked on his final breath. She screamed, but there was no one left to hear her.

4. He Simu

You think she lost her power because Yan Ke (晏柯)wounded her. Wrong. She gave it all away for Duan Xu. Right after his death, Zi Ji (紫姬) appeared—the woman in purple who always nags Feng Yi about taking his medicine. Zi Ji is not a healer. She is a Tian Ting (天庭) overseer, one of the beings who write the rules of fate for every living creature.

Why is Feng Yi born with deadly curse powers but a weak, short body? Zi Ji wrote that. Why is He Simu born as a spirit with no senses? Zi Ji wrote that too. But Feng Yi cursed the heavens when he was young and hot-blooded. His words moved Zi Ji. She came down to the mortal world to experience her own rules.

Now, watching Duan Xu die, Feng Yi convinces her to break the rules. Zi Ji offers He Simu a deal: your eternal life in exchange for one normal, healthy, peaceful lifetime with Duan Xu. He Simu agrees. She becomes a mortal—no spirit power, no senses returned except what Duan Xu had already given her. In the original novel, she later panics so badly over her lost abilities that she tries to call off the wedding. Duan Xu begs her not to leave, saying he does not even need the title of husband.

5. Jiang Ai (姜艾)

While everyone else dies, loses power, or gets turned into pincushions, Jiang Ai thrives. She was trapped under Bai Sanxing’s (白散行) control, miserable and helpless. Then He Simu gave her a bracelet. The moment she put it on, the balance flipped. Bai Sanxing became the obedient one. He cannot act against her will anymore.

She now has three things no one else in this story gets to keep: love, freedom, and money. Bai Sanxing follows her like a loyal pet. She runs her business without interference. She makes her own choices. No one shoots her with arrows. No one asks her to die for an oath. No one steals her immortality.

She is the only character who walks out of Love Beyond the Grace with everything she wanted. Love? Secured. Freedom? Absolute. Profit? Flowing. Call her a side character if you want. She is the one laughing at the end.
