The finale of Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗) on CCTV-8 delivers a cascade of revelations and sacrifices that reshape every key relationship. Wei Rao (魏娆) finally uncovers the truth behind the baby-swapping scandal, only to find herself trapped in a deadly succession struggle. The Crown Prince and Guo Yufeng (郭虞凤) mark her as a prime target.
Knowing her substitute marriage and hidden lineage could destroy the entire Duke of Yingguo (英国公府) household, Wei Rao makes a decisive move: she petitions the emperor herself, requesting a divorce from Lu Zhuo (陆濯). He has genuinely fallen for her, yet understands her dilemma and signs the separation papers. She leaves the Lu family, taking up residence on her own fief as Princess Wu’an (武安翁主).
A Shield of Flesh
At Xianzhuang (闲庄), the iron-cauldron standoff leaves deep scars. Lord Shou’an (寿安君) keeps digging into the old infant-swap case, slowly gathering evidence. Under interrogation, Bitao (碧桃) confesses that Guo Yufeng ordered her to secretly replace the longevity lock Wei Rao had used for the kinship test. Then the Crown Prince’s men ambush Wei Rao. Arrows rain down; Bitao throws herself in front of Wei Rao, taking the volley. She dies in Wei Rao’s arms, leaving her utterly shattered.
Only then does Zhou Fu (周芙) piece together the whole truth. The daughter she raised, Jun Dai (君黛), is not her own. The girl she once pressured with a token—Wei Rao—is her long-lost biological child. Guilt floods Zhou Fu, yet mother and daughter cannot fully reconcile. The earlier cauldron punishment at Xianzhuang has built a wall of hurt between them. Wei Rao understands Zhou Fu’s powerlessness but cannot let go of the harm done.
Pawns and Power
Court conflict intensifies. The Crown Prince’s wife is Wei Shu (魏姝), daughter of Guo Yufeng from the Cheng’an Count (承安伯府) household—a match arranged by the Empress Dowager and Empress to buy loyalty. Once Zhou Fu realizes Wei Rao is her blood, she sees through Guo Yufeng and Wei Shu’s schemes. The two sides become irreconcilable enemies. Wei Shu throws herself into her husband’s cause, and together they target Hongxian (红线), Wei Rao’s sworn sister from their street days. Their plan: plant Hongxian inside the Crown Prince’s residence as a hostage to control Wei Rao. To shield her, Wei Rao and her half-brother, Fourth Prince Liu Shuo (刘朔), place Hongxian in his household as a concubine.
Xie Hualou (谢画楼) comes from the Grand Tutor Xie clan, a family of scholar-officials. Liu Shuo has long admired her and sought her as his principal wife. She once harbored feelings for Lu Zhuo but let them go upon seeing where his heart truly lay. The Xie family weighs the factions: the Crown Prince is ruthless; Liu Shuo is patient and steady, backed by Princess Wu’an. They choose Liu Shuo and agree to the match. In the final episodes, the Crown Prince’s rebellion erupts and is crushed. Wei Shu falls with him. Liu Shuo ascends the throne, making Xie Hualou his empress. Hongxian enters the palace as a consort. Wei Rao and Liu Shuo share a mother but different fathers; as emperor, he still honors her title and choices. The sisters remain close, though one rules a fief and the other dwells deep in the palace, rarely meeting.
