The new Chinese drama Pursuit of Jade (逐玉), starring Dylan Zhang Linghe (张凌赫) and Tian Xiwei (田曦薇), has reached its seventh episode, and the plot is finally igniting. What begins as a straightforward tale of rescue and gratitude is quickly unraveling into a complex web of mystery and hidden identities. Fan Changyu (樊长玉), a simple village girl, saves a mysterious, unconscious man named Xie Zheng (谢征) in the snow.
To repay her and conceal his own whereabouts, he agrees to marry into her impoverished family. Their fragile peace is violently shattered when black-clad assassins raid the Fan home, forcing Xie Zheng to flee with Changyu's younger sister. This attack not only brings Changyu back to rescue Xie Zheng for the second time but also forces the sharp-eyed soldier to look at his savior with new suspicion. The clues he uncovers suggest that Fan Changyu is far more than the ordinary butcher she appears to be.
A Secret Martial Arts Legacy
Xie Zheng's first clue comes from watching Fan Changyu fight. When she defends herself against local bullies, she uses a set of precise, practiced movements. To the untrained eye, it might look like simple self-defense. But Xie Zheng recognizes it immediately. It is the same rare and powerful combat technique taught to him by his own esteemed master. He knows that such sophisticated martial arts are never shared casually; they are closely guarded secrets, passed only to a select few disciples.
Changyu explains her father taught her, claiming he learned it while working as an armed escort. She suggests he might have encountered a wandering master. Xie Zheng, however, finds this explanation deeply unsatisfying. He cannot believe a man of such ordinary means would have access to, or be able to teach, a skill of this caliber. It plants the first seed of doubt about the true nature of her family.
Weapons Forged in War
His suspicion deepens when he handles the tools of her trade. While helping her in the courtyard, Xie Zheng picks up her two heavy butcher knives. He is immediately struck by their weight, balance, and the distinct feel of the metal. Having trained with weapons his entire life, he has an innate sensitivity to such details. To him, the knives feel unmistakably familiar. They are not ordinary cleavers bought from a village smith. He is convinced the metal was originally sourced from military-grade blades, perhaps old swords or sabers from the army.
Someone has melted down these instruments of war and reforged them into the simple tools of a butcher. The shape has changed, but the core material—strong, resilient, and distinct—remains the same. This discovery is impossible to ignore. Why would a poor butcher family in a remote village own weapons, or the remnants of weapons, belonging to the imperial army?
The Identity of the Shadowy Attackers
The final, most chilling piece of the puzzle is the identity of the attackers themselves. Xie Zheng was raised by his uncle, Wei Yan, a powerful man who controls a network of private assassins. Xie Zheng knows these private guards intimately. During the attack, one of the black-clad figures freezes for a split second upon seeing Xie Zheng's face—a look of recognition that does not go unnoticed. Later, as Xie Zheng examines the scene and the fallen enemies, he discovers a small, distinctively crafted whistle on one of them. It is a marker he knows all too well: the unique signature of his uncle's personal death squad. The implication is staggering.
Wei Yan (魏严) would only deploy his most trusted and lethal assets against a target of immense importance. This was no random robbery; it was a targeted operation against the Fan family. The fact that such resources were used confirms that the Fans are, or were, far more significant than they ever let on. Xie Zheng realizes that the sisters are completely unaware of this dangerous legacy, suggesting their parents hid the truth to protect them. Now, with the hunters having found their prey and his own wounds complicating his survival, Xie Zheng understands he must protect Fan Changyu in his own way, for she has saved his life twice, and her secrets are now inextricably linked with his own.
