One group consists of the calculating Zhang Chulan (张楚岚) and his ever-loyal, perplexing guardian Feng Baobao (冯宝宝).
The other includes the mischievously unpredictable Qiu'er (球儿), who has brought along the aging Xia Liuqing (夏柳青) and the formidable Barlow. This "party of six" now travels together, a collection of conflicting agendas bound by the common goal of uncovering Wugen Sheng's secret treasure. Their internal dynamics, however, are as treacherous as the path ahead, creating a volatile mix of cooperation and competition that defines this leg of their journey.
Masters of Misdirection
Among the younger generation, Zhang Chulan prides himself on strategic foresight and clever schemes. His usual advantage is neutralized by the presence of Qiu'er, a man whose cheerful, harmless demeanor is a masterful disguise. Qiu'er operates without regard for the rules or conventional morality that constrain others, making him wildly unpredictable. This was clear when he casually used his supernatural ability in public to counter Xia Liuqing's bluff, an act that horrified the official company overseeing Yiren (异人).
This lack of boundaries makes Qiu'er a significant variable in Chulan's carefully laid plans. While they must cooperate to progress, there is no trust between them. Qiu'er has not classified Chulan as a comrade. Their relationship is a tense dance of mutual exploitation, where shared goals barely mask underlying suspicion. This dynamic guarantees that their partnership is temporary and fraught with potential betrayal, adding constant suspense to their shared scenes.
Yet, Qiu'er is not merely a chaotic element. Previous seasons revealed a man capable of deep empathy, as seen with Chen Duo. In this episode, a rare moment of solemnity at a friend's grave hints at a core of genuine loyalty. His complexity lies in this contradiction: he is unbound by tradition but bound by personal connections, a trait that may ultimately define his role in the conflicts to come.

Feng Baobao, known for her overwhelming power and simple toolkit of a kitchen knife and shovel, meets her match once again. The moment she senses Barlow's presence, her instinct is not to fight but to flee—a reaction unheard of for her. Barlow represents a unique threat. As Baobao explains, he can completely conceal his aura, making him undetectable to her sharp senses.
Qiu'er adds crucial context: Barlow is a former special forces soldier who disappeared for two years only to return unchanged, a clue to his extraordinary nature. Although he appears to be in his prime, he is actually over sixty years old. His longevity and power stem from his mastery of one of the Eight miracle, the Liuku Xianzei (六库仙贼). This ability makes him a direct counter to Baobao's straightforward combat style.
His introduction shifts the power balance within the group. For the first time, Baobao has a clear and present threat to consider, forcing her and by extension Zhang Chulan to adapt their strategies. Barlow's history and motives remain shrouded, promising significant developments for his character as the treasure hunt delves deeper into the secrets of the past.
The Heart of the Mystery
The elder figures, Xia Liuqing and Jin Feng, provide the emotional and historical backbone for the current adventure. Their lifelong bond is defined by unrequited devotion: Jin Feng's obsession with the leader Wugen Sheng, and Xia Liuqing's unwavering protection of Jin Feng. They are living bridges to the past, carrying memories of the fateful gathering of the Thirty-Six Thieves.
Jin Feng, in particular, is a pivotal figure. Her personal history intertwines with the series' greatest enigma: the truth behind the Jiashen Rebellion of 1944. This mystery cost Tian teacher his peaceful sleep, drove Zhang Tianshi (张天师) to extreme measures, and now fuels the ambitions of figures like Lü Ci (吕慈) and Qu Tong. Jin Feng's knowledge could untangle the web connecting Feng Baobao's lost origins to the present chaos.
Meanwhile, the ominous shadow of Qu Tong looms large. Her ability to control Ma Xianhong (马仙洪), and his struggle against it, introduces a disturbing theme of manipulation that runs parallel to the main quest. Her machinations suggest that the battle for the past's secrets is also a battle for the future's autonomy, ensuring that the road to the Twenty-Four Solar Valley is paved with both historical revelation and imminent danger.
