By the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasties(420-589A.D.), kites began to be used as a means of conveying messages. By the time of the Song Dynasty（960-1279）, kite flying became a popular outdoor activity. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhang Zeduan’s Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival also shows people flying kites.
