If you can I would try do get access to academic journals from China. Along It’s not that accessible, it’s definitely worth getting creditable resources since theirs so much misunderstanding and misinformation about hanfu.

I suggest basting the pleats down instead of pinning them as it would protect delicate fabrics and it would have been a technique available to most people in ancient china since it doesn’t require modern pins or complicated molds.

Another suggestion for DIY, if you don’t have a fancy pleating iron (it also works really well for slinky fabric like chiffon!). Get a 100% wool mat. It’s great because you can iron the fabric as you pleat and then pin it down into the mat as you go so you don’t accidentally move the fabric AND you can use it as a big ironing area for future project needs! Note though: they can get expensive if you buy one marketed for “sewing”, but I got one for $30 that’s roughly 30×30 in at a horse tacking shop! just don’t iron over sensitive materials like plastic, woods or stone only since they’re usually 1″)
