Hanfu and cheongsam are both traditional Chinese costumes, but they are not the same.

Cheongsam is a garment made by Han Chinese women in the Republic of China, but blended with elements of women’s clothing of that time. It got the name of cheongsam because of the complete Manchuization of Han dress culture at that time.

They were invented in the early years of the republic as a symbol of the new modern Chinese costume, inspired by the costumes of the Qing Dynasty. Some people think Qipao and the Changshan of the Qing Dynasty have many similarities, but I personally do not think they are strongly related.
