By day, its pavilions and waterways become the canvas for the grandest exhibition of potted lotus in its history, a breathtaking "Summer Lotus Scroll" showcasing the floral heritage of China. The "Rhyme of Jiangnan: Humble Administrator’s Gathering" National Potted Lotus Exhibition marks a historic convergence. For the first time, over 200 prized lotus and water lily varieties from 31 horticultural institutions across 21 cities in 16 provinces grace the garden’s classical landscape. From delicate bowl-sized micro-lotus to imposing shoulder-height specimens, the sheer scale and diversity are unprecedented. This living collection paints a vibrant panorama of China’s horticultural prowess, allowing visitors to "tour the Nine Provinces" through their captivating blooms within a single, iconic garden setting.

The exhibition highlights the stunning tropical water lily ‘Secret Realm’, its exotic colors a vivid contrast against the garden’s timeless green. Three new cultivars, meticulously bred by the Humble Administrator's Garden itself, take center stage. Named after its famed landmarks - ‘Seeking Antiquity at Fragrant Isle’, ‘Listening to Rain’, and ‘Searching for Melody at Distant Fragrance’ - each embodies the poetic spirit of its namesake location through unique petal formations and colors.
The exhibition transcends static display. Observing masterful "Six Techniques of Lotus" flower arranging competitions reveals the artistry behind the blooms. Themed garden parties featuring lantern parades and traditional music under the stars create immersive cultural moments. Hands-on workshops allow visitors to craft their own lotus arrangements, guided by skilled horticulturists.
When Ancient Walls Dance with Light
As twilight descends, the Humble Administrator’s Garden undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis. The acclaimed "Elegance Inquired at Humble Administrator’s Garden" night experience transforms the heritage site into an ethereal dreamscape. Recently captivating a delegation of over 40 international journalists, this project stands as the first World Heritage site conservation and activation initiative fully evaluated by China’s monitoring center. It masterfully employs light, sound, and projection to reimagine the garden’s nocturnal persona.
The innovative project uses light as a painter’s brush and shadow as ink upon the garden’s ancient "paper". Focusing on the central garden and the adjacent Li Residence, it crafts an immersive journey themed around elegance and the moon. Sophisticated lighting techniques, interactive projections, and carefully curated soundscapes create multi-sensory tableaux. Visitors become figures moving within a living, breathing classical scroll, embodying the aesthetic ideal of "people walking within the painting, becoming part of its scenery."
Foreign journalists, exploring during a recent visit focused on China’s development achievements, were enthralled. They wandered illuminated pathways, paused in softly glowing halls, and crossed bridges where pavilions were dramatically silhouetted against the night. Ethereal digital deer seemed to step through dappled bamboo shadows , while synthesized cicadas and birdsong enhanced the natural ambiance. The journey culminated in a transcendent cultural moment: an open-air Kunqu Opera performance of the classic Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭). Performed on a traditional stage over water, the hauntingly beautiful melodies and graceful movements of the performers captivated the international audience.
