During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the art of flower arranging was introduced to the court and became an indispensable pastime for the harem imperial concubines and an indispensable decoration for the court, then spreading to the nobility and the literati, who used flower arranging for poetry and painting. By the Song Dynasty (960-1279), flower arranging had become a fashion.
