After making western costumes, I now want to make costumes consistent with my eastern heritage.

  • Hey! my reply disappeared! :p Maybe because I included a link. I was saying, there is an article on this site about this fan, it's called a Yao Shan, you can find it if you tupe it in the search bar.

Does anyone know what type of fan is in the picture?
  • You nailed it! 😉 I think it's the style of the top, but it still kind looks like a saree ^^

    Finally I made it
  • Here is the article of reference article, it's very well explained : https://www.newhanfu.com/31453.html

    Mamian2
  • If you have enough length, I don't think you need to piece the 2 borders together, the bottom patterns are large enough 😉

    mamian skirt
  • Very noce fabric, and great upcycling project! Are you experienced with silk? The key to a mamian is the pleats. Just be prepared that silk may not crease as well as the polyester you usually see modern mamian are made of 😉

    mamian skirt
  • Anything is okay aslong as you have arguments to back up your choice 😉

    Is that true?
  • It depends on your medium. Do you draw traditionally or digitally? It's easier on digital, for you can apply a different layer with your pattern on it and adjust to the folds and volumes, with a "multiply" mode. In traditional drawing, I think it's better to get the drepaes, folds and volumes right befor drawing patterns on. It would save you time since not every bit of fabric is visible in the final composition.

    Tips for Drawing Hanfu?
  • It's a big divide in hanfu community. The "han" in hanfu refers to the "Han" ethnics. Since Qing dynasty was a Manchu ethnics dominated dynasty, the dresses in the Qing royal court are Manchu clothes. Not Han. By the same logic, the Yuan dynasty is also controversial, since it was Mongol dominated. However, there was still Han people in those dynasties, so if you are going for historical and ethnical accuracy, you can find references of han people in those dynasties. Then you can also argue that fashion is inspired by many sources, the Yisan robe in Ming dynasty was inspired from Mongol robes, the Qipao worn by Chinese women in the 1900 are inspired from Qing dynasty Manchu dresses, so.... 😉

    Is that true?
  • Do you mean, with what clothes? Cause the obvious answer is "put it on your head" ^_^

    How to wear this hat?
  • Hi, where does the image come from? I mean from which anime? The character could be wearing hanfu, even from a japanese anime. Considering the cultural proximity of ancient Japan and China, it's not unusual for their clothing to look alike.

    What's the difference?
